#156: 4 videos you won't find anywhere else

Issue #156

I got a phone call I wasn't expecting.

A project called Voices of 250 was curating video messages for America's 250th birthday. The roster includes Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPmOrganChase, the presidents of the NYSE and NASDAQ, and leaders across nearly every industry.

I was shocked they wanted a kid from Brooklyn with no pedigree and no business training to record a video message too.

I said yes.

So did three people I deeply respect: Daymond John, unicorn builder Stu Sjouwerman, and serial entrepreneur and powerhouse Tom Cummins.

After all, I invited them to participate.

All four videos are premiering inside my latest article. World premieres. You will not find them anywhere else yet.

But these brand new videos are only part of it.

The article itself asks a question most brand builders don't think to ask: if America, the most defiant startup in history, refused to play it safe for 250 years: "Why is your brand still asking for permission to boldly claim new territory?"

I won't spoil the rest.

You need to read it and watch all four.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend,
David

The Saturday email your competitors hope you never find. (One coffee. Zero fluff.)

I'm David Brier—the guy CEOs call when they've burned so much cash on marketing, their spouses think they have a coke habit. I'm like rehab for your brand, except instead of getting you clean, I get you profitable. Think of me as the Betty Ford Clinic of branding, but with better ROI and no group hugs. (Explains why I wrote the bestseller Brand Intervention that Daymond John calls "Genius.")

Reader A great book doesn't give you answers. It changes the questions you ask. That's what most get wrong about books. Most people treat books like information delivery systems. A book is a decision tree disguised as chapters. This is why I am celebrating National Book Lover's Day, August 9th Because every page in a book is a fork (and every chapter is a knife). You either walk away asking better questions, or you wasted your weekend. AI can summarize a book in 90 seconds. But AI cannot...

Issue #159 Reader Every single week I get the call "We hired [branding guru du jour] who downloaded the latest branding algorithms from the cosmos via Starlink during a juice cleanse." It's painful to hear. It's why, this morning, I am publishing the field guide to telling the fakes from the real ones. Why? Because someone just dropped $50K on a branding guru who spent three months "aligning energies" and delivered zero strategy. While someone else dropped six figures on a firm that produced...

Issue #158 Reader One word kills more deals than any objection, any pricing complaint, any "we went another direction." That word? Digest. "Hey, I'm going to need a little time to digest what you just told me. Circle back in a couple of weeks?" John Barrows calls it the kiss of death. After 25+ years inside Salesforce, LinkedIn, Google, Amazon, and Okta, after 250+ podcast episodes and 1.2 million downloads, John's seen it happen more times than he can count. John had me on his podcast, Make...
